“…the Most High rules in the kingdom of men,
Gives it to whomever He will,
And sets over it the lowest of men.” – Daniel 4: 17

No authority exercised by men is given except by God.  He alone owns all authority ultimately, no matter how much other powers seem to exercise it on their own merit.

In this chapter, there’s an amazing story where the king of the known world at the time writes to you and me directly, to say what he witnessed concerning the power of God – that he was flourishing in his prosperity, prideful of what his hand had accomplished, was debased by God and lost the power of his reasoning for seven years (which God told him beforehand He would do), and then had his kingdom restored, but with new humility this time toward the ultimate power in control.  He writes,

“And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever:”

“For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom is from generation to generation.
All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
He does according to His will in the army of heaven
And among the inhabitants of the earth.
No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?'” – Daniel 4:34-35

God is able to give unfathomable power to the deserving or under-deserving, to the small or great, evil or virtuous – anyone He pleases to unravel the story He’s planned since the beginning.  There’s no power in competition with His, in that He would have to exert Himself to combat it (with exception to the great exertions of Jesus, who fought evil and won within the limitations of humanity, living a perfect life for our sakes so that we have the real opportunity to walk as He did).

Take comfort that God is sovereign today.  Name that thing that seems to overpower while saying, as Nebuchadnezzar did, “And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”  Name that usurping lie, and remind it that “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace…”  The God of the universe – the ultimate authority – loves you, and no other power can keep you from His love.
